One of my favourite things about going to my hairdresser is the heavenly scalp massage I receive while she’s washing my hair. I’ve always wished that part of my appointment lasted longer. That feeling of euphoric relaxation, the tingles up my spine, the body melting sensation…literalIy one of my favourite things ever. So naturally, when I saw that you could book a 60 or 90-minute Head Spa treatment at Retreat at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, I had to wipe the drool from the corner of my mouth. Yes PLEASE!!!
I never really thought about the science behind why a scalp massage feels so good, but during my Head Spa appointment at Retreat, I learned that the physiological response is so much more than skin deep.
Why a Head Massage is Good for You
A head massage is good for you because it taps into both physical and neurological responses in the body:
- Stimulates Nerve Endings: The scalp is rich in nerve endings. Gentle pressure and rhythmic movements activate these nerves, sending pleasant signals to the brain.
- Boosts Blood Circulation: Massaging the scalp increases blood flow, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles and brain—this can result in a light, almost euphoric sensation.
- Releases Endorphins: Head massage helps release “feel-good” chemicals like serotonin and endorphins, which naturally reduce stress and promote a sense of calm.
- Reduces Muscle Tension: Many people hold tension in their neck, jaw, and scalp. A head massage helps relax tight muscles in these areas, providing both physical relief and mental clarity.
- Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System: This is your body’s “rest and digest” mode. A good head massage can trigger this state, slowing heart rate, reducing anxiety, and promoting deep relaxation.
- Soothes the Senses: The combination of touch, scent (if aromatherapy is used), and a calming environment creates a multi-sensory experience that tells the brain, “You’re safe. You can relax now.”
First Impressions: Warm Welcomes & Tranquility
From the moment I stepped into Retreat at the Hyatt Regency, I knew I was in for something special. After checking in, I was offered a choice of water or tea and taken to a peaceful, softly lit waiting area. Khloe, my Head Spa specialist, explained the treatment and took me to a private room with a big, cozy towel and robe, a place to put my belongings, and all the privacy I needed to get comfortable. She asked about any scalp or hair concerns I had and helped me lie back on the treatment bed with a warm towel behind my neck and an eye mask for full relaxation mode.
The Ritual Begins: Scalp Exfoliation & Detox
First things first. Khloe needed to know what she was dealing with up there so we started with a thorough examination of my head with an electronic magnifying detector. As I held a small screen, Khloe ran the magnifier over my scalp to get a good idea of the condition of my skin and hair follicles. You could see each hair and any buildup around the roots and skin. It was really eye-opening to see my scalp up that close, but it gave Khloe the information she needed to choose which products I needed for optimal scalp health.
Next, a gentle rinse using warm water, followed by the Living Proof Scalp Exfoliator. Khloe used soothing circular motions to scrub my scalp with her fingers and a soft brush. It was stimulating and deeply relaxing—a perfect balance of clarity and calm.
Next came a double cleanse with Living Proof Detox Shampoo. At this point, she used a jade comb which works by gently massaging the scalp and stimulating blood circulation. Apparently jade can potentially promote healthier hair growth and reduce hair loss. The smooth surface of the jade comb also helps distribute natural oils throughout the hair, contributing to a more lustrous appearance. She told me it would help break down buildup and leave my scalp feeling fresh and light.
Deep Conditioning & A Touch of Luxury
After cleansing, Khloe applied a hydrating hair mask to the mid-lengths and ends of my hair. She then used a steam bath to help the product absorb. During the steam treatment, she performed the most amazing hand and arm massage using hot stones. It was an unexpected bonus that made the whole service feel like full-body therapy, not just hair care. A warm towel wiped everything clean, leaving me feeling nurtured and balanced. At this point, I was so relaxed, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get up and walk straight afterward.
Soothing Finishes: Neck, Shoulders & Scalp
Just when I thought this Vancouver Head Spa treatment couldn’t get better, it did. After rinsing the mask out with the Retreat signature arched shower, Khloe moved into a light neck and shoulder massage, finishing with a focused scalp pressure-point massage. I really had no idea that there were so many pressure points on my head that could make my whole body feel good. It was pure bliss.
Then she analyzed my scalp again and showed me the dramatic difference. No more build up, flaky skin or laclustre hair. She then applied the Living Proof Dry Scalp Treatment—an ultra-light serum that soothed and nourished without feeling greasy. She gently massaged it into my scalp, enhancing absorption and calming any last bits of tension I had left.
The Final Touches: Styling & Thoughtful Extras
After wrapping my hair in a towel, Khloe let me change into a robe and offered tea and snacks while she prepared for styling. She dried and styled my hair with a simple, professional finish that made me feel polished and refreshed. I really appreciated this part as I still had to go back to the office to work.
The entire experience felt luxurious but never over the top. It was thoughtful, expert, and beautifully executed. My hair felt so soft afterward and looked so much brighter. I left feeling lighter, both physically and mentally, and ready to make this Head Spa treatment a regular thing.
